The way news outlets depict cities also gravely influences which stereotypes are perpetuated from them, and how their population might reflect on living there. Cities that are only mentioned in the news for crimes can quickly become tainted in the eyes of the general public and make residents feel disconnected from the city they once loved, even causing them to move or change their political views in an attempt to be able to identify with it again (DellaVigna & Kaplan, 2006).
Have you ever noticed how your city is portrayed by news outlet?
San Francisco, California
Known for its cultural diversity and progressive spirit, San Francisco has faced significant scrutiny due to escalating crime rates reported in the media. The portrayal of the Californian city as a hub of rampant crime can contribute to a sense of unease among residents and potential tourists, and shape public perception of the city and its locals, even leading to stigmatization of neighborhoods particularly highlighted in crime reports (Baustin, 2023).
The reporting focused on crimes also hides the real issues that the inhabitants are dealing with, mainly the struggle with the housing situation and lack of support for drug addicts. With all of this, San Franciscans are not able to connect with the city’s identity and have to see a place that for so long was represented as colorful, happy and full of life, be stereotyped based on the results of unaddressed problems (Wolf, 2023).
