Stereotypes & The City has explored the various ways that cities and their people are portrayed and perceived. We have examined how different media—film, photography, literature, and music—shape and occasionally distort the identities of these urban settings. Whether they are the action-packed streets of Rio de Janeiro in Fast Five or the glossy yet simplified portrayals of Paris in Emily in Paris, these representations have the power to perpetuate stereotypes. At the same time, Do the Right Thing‘s demonstrates how they can also help locals develop a feeling of pride and unity.
Photography can convey the soul and vitality of cities, highlighting their distinct features and occasionally reinforcing inaccurate perspectives. Poetry and music, on the other hand, provide frequently intimate viewpoints that can expand our comprehension of a city’s identity and its citizens’ lives, but also fall into the trap of romanticizing it through the bias of the artists.
In the end, the representations and narratives we see about cities shape our opinions and, by extention, the lives of people that reside there. I hope to have encouraged a more critical and empathetic examination of the many facets of urban life, pushing stereotypes aside and highlighting the rich, multifaceted identities that cities and their people embody.
